Background

Set within a university’s Faculty of Fine Arts, the story follows a group of ambitious students collaborating on a theater production of Romeo & Romeo, a queer reimagining of the classic tragedy. Jack (Earth Pirapat), the determined director, seeks to rewrite the ending so the lovers stay together, but his professional goals are complicated by his volatile history with Dean (Mix Sahaphap), the production’s lead actor and his former lover. As rehearsals progress, the boundary between the stage and reality blurs, drawing in Raffy (Boom Tharatorn)—an ambitious student who craves Dean’s lead role and has his sights set on Jack—and Rome (Aou Thanaboon), Jack’s younger brother, who finds himself caught in a web of manipulation. The production becomes a pressure cooker for emotional scars, driven largely by the high-stakes tension between the lead actors. While Jack and Dean clash over their past, Arnold (Joss Way-ar) complicates the group dynamic by using Tua (Gawin Caskey) to navigate his own confused desires. Their “experimentation” behind the scenes echoes the theatrical tragedy, proving that within the Faculty of Fine Arts, the most convincing performances are the ones the characters put on for each other.

Core Themes & Tone

The tone of the series is intense, emotionally volatile, and unapologetically “messy,” leaning into the dark side of youth and passion. It explores themes of the thin line between love and hate, the corruption of ambition, and the cyclical nature of toxic relationships. There is a strong emphasis on performativity—not just on the stage, but in how the characters mask their true intentions to manipulate those around them. By using the tragedy of Romeo & Romeo as a backdrop, the series highlights the self-destructive tendencies of young love and the heavy cost of chasing dreams in an environment where everyone is a competitor. The atmosphere is slick and cinematic, blending the high stakes of a theatrical production with the raw, gritty reality of interpersonal betrayal.

Drama Adaptation

Only Friends: Dream On is a standalone story within the Only Friends universe, expanding on the franchise’s signature focus on complex, interconnected relationship dynamics. This entry shifts the setting from the nightlife-centric world of the parent story to the rigorous demands of the university stage. While it maintains the “entangled friend group” trope, it adapts the narrative to a character-driven exploration of artistic rivalry and unresolved trauma. By centering the plot on a theatrical production, the drama uses the stage as a meta-narrative device to mirror the characters’ internal struggles, providing a fresh perspective on the themes of love and betrayal that define the franchise.
